and families in McLean County."

New: Learn about new Drug Disposal efforts in McLean County!
Our Work: The Heartland Coalition focuses on substance abuse and violence
prevention programs and activities. Prevention is a proactive process that empowers
a wide range of concerned community members, including drug-free youth leaders, parents,
educators, public health agencies, law enforcement agencies, local governments, and
private businesses to create and reinforce conditions that promote healthy behaviors
and lifestyles.
Through Heartland Coalition for Youth and Families, individuals and organizations
in McLean County that would like to reduce use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs
(ATOD) by youth can come together to share ideas and coordinate their efforts. Heartland
Coalition brings such concerned people together, where they can work with each other and
with the leading drug prevention professionals in the country.
Our History: The Heartland Coalition for Youth and Families was established in 1995 when the
organization received funding from the federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP).
In 1998 the funding source switched to the state’s “Communities CAN” initiative. In 2002
the main funding source again changed, this time to the federal Drug-Free Communities
Program in conjunction with local funders.
The Board has always included as wide of a range of community members as possible. Chestnut
Health Systems and Project Oz are the two agencies who have served as fiscal agents over the
years of the various grants. Employees of both agencies sit on the board along with other
community members.
